According to recent statistics, Zoloft is the most prescribed antidepressant on the market today. Before they lost patent protection several years ago, Pfizer was making over $3 billion in yearly sales of the drug. Yet even with sertraline now available as a generic, the company still makes hundreds of millions from Zoloft annually.
The drug is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, or SSRI, that is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder and related afflictions. SSRI's act to correct chemical imbalances of serotonin in the brain, which experts believe is the cause of these problems.
While Zoloft can does in fact help with serotonin levels, and can temporarily alleviate the problems it is indicated to treat, it is certainly not a solution. Long term studies on the effects of these drugs have not been conducted. In the short term, there are a host of potential issues to contend with. Far beyond the minor headache or upset stomach.
People who have been taking the drug have reported many different side effects. The following excerpts come directly from the official Zoloft web site:
Most Common Zoloft Side Effects
Other Possible Problems
The Zoloft web site urges you to tell your doctor right away if you become severely ill, have hallucinations, muscle twitching, racing heartbeat and other symptoms of a life-threatening condition known as Serotonin Syndrome.
They also warn of potential severe allergic reactions, unusual bleeding or bruising, and mental issues such as confusion and headaches that could result from low sodium levels.
According to the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, some patients have suffered from painful headaches and tooth grinding as one of Zoloft side effects.
The most recent concerns raised about antidepressants involve the fact that some children, teens and adolescents have experienced increased thoughts of suicide as a result of taking these medications. A few have actually committed suicide and there are lawsuits pending claiming the drugs were the culprit. This has led to a new black box warning on all SSRI antidepressants.
At the end of last year there was another warning about the potential risk of a rare heart and lung condition called PPHN in newborns of mother's taking SSRIs while pregnant.
UPDATE: It's interesting to note that there is currently a lawsuit claiming that Pfizer withheld research that showed Zoloft's inefficacy over placebo. Some are saying that there is a very slight difference in the effect the drug has on those taking it vs. those on a placebo.
If this is in fact the case, this is quite disheartening for those who have been taking it for years thinking the drug is actually making them feel better. Think of all the side effects they could have avoided!
Although we are proponents of natural alternatives here at HSG, we recognize the fact that in some cases people do need to be on prescription medications. But if these medications aren't performing much better than sugar pills then how can they allow these companies to sell them, make billions of dollars and risk people's lives? Very scary. Let's see how the Zoloft lawsuit plays out. Unfortunately no matter what evidence comes to light and which side wins, we doubt they will pull the drug off the market any time soon.
Recent studies show that depression, like many other health conditions, is avoidable, and unless there is a strong genetic component comes about from poor health of the brain and its neurotransmitters. One of these neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) is serotonin.
Why does this problem exist? It comes down to nutrition. The brain is not getting enough nutrients to function properly. Every organ in your body needs a steady supply of a broad range of nutrients...otherwise they will slowly lose the ability to function properly. Many scientists believe that depression and similar disorders are brought about from "brain malnutrition", for lack of a better term.
The good news is there are ways to reverse the condition, and they don't have to cause a laundry list of potential side effects like Zoloft and other meds can. There are natural supplements that can literally "feed" your brain, enabling it to once again function at optimal levels.
