There are literally thousands of weight loss programs out there, each one offering a different "solution" to your problem. Whether you are looking to shed a few pounds or lose several hundred, there is a marketer out there who will "guarantee" you will get the results you want, usually within a certain amount of time.
The problem is, most of these programs simply do not work. Other diet regimens may work but could be dangerous to your health.
There is no miracle pill or diet that is guaranteed to help you lose the weight you want to lose without doing any harm to your body. It simply does not exist!
The human body is not built to be deprived of nutrients for an extended period of time. That is why many people on the Atkin's or similar diets experience intestinal problems after a few weeks of limiting their carbohydrate intake.
Carbohydrates and fat are essential parts of proper body function.
Eliminating carbohydrates and fats from your diet is extremely dangerous, and could lead to irreversible health problems.
Many weight loss diet programs leave you constantly hungry, and therefore unable to maintain the diet for a long period of time. Many times you are left in a worse situation than you were before you started the diet, with a decrease in muscle mass and a damaged immune system.
The only true way to lose excess pounds and maintain a healthy weight is to commit yourself to a different way of looking at food and exercise. It's not a matter of "dieting" for a few days or a few weeks or even a few months. It's about slowly incorporating changes that will just become routine for you over time.
What does this mean? Let us break it down to three basic steps:
1) Stop overeating. Even if you have your three meals a day, and no snacks, you still may be overeating. The portion sizes served at most restaurants are 1 1/2 to 2 times, and sometimes more, the size of what a portion should be. So if you eat three meals out it's like you're eating 4-6 full meals. Try to cut your portions down, just a little, at each meal, and you'll see the difference in your waist line. In time, those "smaller" meals will be all that your body needs as it gets used to not being overstuffed at every meal.
2) Exercise. This doesn't mean you have to start running marathons. Just move. Go take a walk around the block. Do some jumping jacks at your desk. Go for a bike ride when the weather is nice. Try to incorporate a little exercise as often as you can. The benefits go way beyond losing some weight. You'll have more energy, you'll be happier, your body will be in better shape to fight off illness. There's no reason not to get some exercise as often as you can. Even something as basic as walking to work can reap enormous benefits.
3) Eat Fruits and Vegetables. Sure, it's more fun to eat a pepperoni pizza, but how hard is it to incorporate some fruits and vegetables into your diet? They are everywhere. Even if you're at a diner at 3 in the morning scarfing down a burger, why not get some string beans on the side? What about some fruit, yogurt and granola in the morning...it's delicious, and a much better option than that greasy donut. Fresh fruit and vegetables are obviously the best choices, but if that's not an option, you can get them frozen or canned and have them around all year long. There's really no excuse.
One where you make a commitment to yourself to do these three things. Stop eating until you're absolutely stuffed at each meal, start getting some exercise and add some healthy fruits and vegetables to your diet. If you can do all three of these, the weight will fly off and you'll be a healthier, happier person. Even if you can do one of the three for now, you'll be much better off.
So why not get started on the very best weight loss program there is...embarking on a lifelong commitment to eating better and moving around!
